Crusader Kings II is a Grand strategy video game developed and published by Paradox Interactive as a sequel to Crusader Kings. It was released for Microsoft Windows on 14 February 2012 to positive reviews.

GameplayEdit

The game can be described as a dynasty simulator where the player controls a Medieval dynasty from 1066 to 1453. Through the strategic use of marriages and assassinations amongst many other things, the player works to achieve success for his dynasty. The simulation is open-ended so the definition of 'success' is completely defined by the player.

The game employs a genetics and education system where children will inherit the traits, culture, religion and skills of their parents and educator. This adds an additional strategy to marriages where a player will attempt to breed the best individuals to maximise the quality of future offspring.

There are five levels of authority in the game; four of which are playable: Barons (unplayable), Counts/Earls, Dukes, Kings and Emperors. Emperor positions are particularly rare, with only the Holy Roman Emperor and the Byzantine Emperor seated in 1066.

Release and receptionEdit

A demo was released on February 4, 2012 which featured four playable characters over a 20 year span. A marketing campaign for the game featured light comedy videos on the concept of the Seven Deadly Sins. The game was met with glowing reviews and has attained a metascore of 84 at metacritic.
