Crown barony

A baron is a ruler of the first tier. A ruler who has no title higher than baron rank is unplayable (except the heads of patrician families in great naval republics). Barons control a single holding (known as a barony) within a county; either a castle, a city or a temple. Barons are almost never independent and are usually a vassal of the count who controls the county where the holding is located.

Title variants[]

Most male rulers of baron-rank are known as barons, and most female rulers of baron-rank are known as baronesses. There are, however, several cultural/religious variants which are summarised in the table below:

Note: religous title variants 'trump' cultural ones. For example, a ruler of baron-rank with Mongol culture and Tengri Pagan religion will be known as a Hetman.
